An explanation of codes

When reading a text, there are theoretically numerous codes used to write that can be interpreted. All of the codes are used to convey some sort of message. Some codes were spelled out by Roland Barthes in his novel entitled S/Z. These codes consisted of the hermeneutic code, symbolic code, semiotic code, proairetic code, and cultural code. A short explanation of each code follows.

Hermeneutic code:
All of the units or events used to articulate a question.

Semantic Code

Refers to connotation to an unwritten meaning

Symbolic Code
Deeper principle that usually relies on antithesis

Proairetic Code
Sequence of actions

Cultural Code

Refers to traditional human experience***

Throughout the starring of McKenzie Wark, these different codes will arise, along with possible other codes. They will be pointed out by the use of three-letter abbreviations (HER, SEM, SYM, ACT, and CUL).
